As I think about the successes and challenges our clients faced in 2022, there were many; but the one that is foremost in my mind are the many practice owners who were struggling with how to run their businesses when the resounding mantra from clinicians was “…that all the company cares about are billable hours.”
Frankly, billable hours should be top of mind! And clinicians should be in full agreement.
Why?
Because aside from keeping the lights on and covering payroll, billable hours are authorized hours of clinical services and should be of utmost importance to everyone, including clinicians and families.
When our clients express this struggle, my retort is always the same. If “Johnny” has a 25 hour a week authorization, and assuming you trust the team conducting the assessments, then what “Johnny” needs is 25 hours a week of services to reach his full potential. This may not be the case as Johnny progresses, but initially, what is authorized is what he/she needs and what should be scheduled and provided.
Easy tips:
The challenge is really one of ensuring everyone is on the same page. When owners and senior leadership relay expectations using language that clinicians don’t relate to, the outcome is one where the teams are not unified and working toward achieving the same vision.
- Establish your company’s vision, mission and values and communicate them loudly and often.
- Communication is key – communicate expectations in terms of your vision, mission and values which ensures your communications resonate with all employees including your clinicians.
